Biblical Principles for the Workplace
I affirm and commit to the following biblical principles as the foundation for my conduct and approach to work in the workplace:
Doing Great Work
I believe that my work is ultimately done “as to the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), and therefore I commit to:
- Seeking to do great work—the best possible work in the best possible way
- Working hard and refusing to be slack in my work
- Committing all my works unto the LORD, trusting that my thoughts shall be established (Proverbs 16:3)
- Offering everything I do and everything I’m working on to God
I recognize that the quality and integrity of my work reflects my faith and honors God.
Working with Colleagues
I believe that working with others gives us a better reward for our labor, and I commit to:
- Understanding that great work is defined by Colossians 3:23 (“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men”) and Ephesians 6:7 (“With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men”)
- Recognizing that collaboration is itself a form of work, following the example of the craftsmen who worked together to build the Tabernacle in Exodus
- Focusing on my own work and responsibilities
- Minding my own business and not involving myself in matters that don’t concern me
Submission to Authority
I believe in honoring workplace authority as an expression of biblical submission, and I commit to:
- Following what management directs without a rebellious spirit
- Maintaining a respectful attitude even when I disagree with decisions
- Offering counsel when appropriate, while ultimately submitting to leadership decisions
This does not mean abandoning wisdom or godly counsel, but rather maintaining a humble and cooperative spirit in disagreement.
Treatment of Colleagues
I believe that my interactions with colleagues must reflect Christ’s love and character, and I commit to:
- Never harboring bad feelings toward colleagues
- Never speaking badly of colleagues
- Exercising great caution before criticizing a co-worker to their manager
- Pursuing reconciliation and forgiveness in conflicts
I recognize that gossip, slander, and bitterness have no place in a workplace that honors God.
My Commitment
By God’s grace and with reliance on the Holy Spirit, I commit to embodying these biblical principles in my daily work. I acknowledge that I will fall short, but I trust in God’s forgiveness and transforming power to shape me into a worker who brings glory to Him.
